Fifth Public-Private Sector Dialogue (PPSD) on Virtual Assets and AML/CFT Implementation

Dates: September 2-3, 2022

Location: Livingstone, Zambia

The Secretariat of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG), in collaboration with the Bank of Zambia, is pleased to announce the Fifth Public-Private Sector Dialogue (PPSD) scheduled to take place from September 2 to 3, 2022, in the beautiful city of Livingstone, Zambia.

Theme: Virtual Assets and the Implementation of AML/CFT Programmes in the ESAAMLG Region.

The PPSD is a culmination of the 22nd Council of Ministers and 44th ESAAMLG Task Force Meetings, which were held from August 28 to September 2, 2022. These meetings provided a vital platform for the member states to engage in discussions and collaborative efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing in the region.

The Council of Ministers Meeting, a significant precursor to the PPSD, was officially opened by the distinguished President Hakainde Hichilema. His presence underscored the importance of the region’s commitment to strengthening AML/CFT measures.

The PPSD itself was officially inaugurated by Zambia’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane. His presence highlights the financial sector’s pivotal role in addressing the challenges posed by virtual assets in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing.

Key Objectives of the PPSD:

  1. To foster a collaborative environment for public and private sector stakeholders to discuss the evolving landscape of virtual assets in the ESAAMLG region.
  2. To share best practices and strategies for the implementation of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT) programs.
  3. To promote international cooperation and information sharing among participants.

Expected Outcomes:

Participants can look forward to engaging in insightful discussions and knowledge sharing on the challenges and opportunities associated with virtual assets in the realm of AML/CFT. The PPSD aims to enhance cooperation and coordination among public and private sector entities, resulting in a more robust and effective defense against money laundering and terrorist financing in the ESAAMLG region.

This event is set to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing efforts to strengthen the region’s financial security, and it underscores the commitment of ESAAMLG and its member states to creating a more secure financial environment.

We look forward to welcoming all delegates to Livingstone, Zambia, and anticipate constructive and fruitful discussions during the Fifth Public-Private Sector Dialogue. Together, we can build a safer and more resilient financial ecosystem in the ESAAMLG region.
